Three Refrains from Nowhere… (2021)

for violin (6 minutes 30 seconds)

As the first part of the title suggests, this piece consists of three main sections, each of which begins with a refrain of tremolando notes. The contrasting blocks of thematic material stated in the first section are subject to re-ordering, development and fragmentation in the subsequent two sections, in a quasi-improvisatory way. A subdued coda closes the movement ambiguously, hinting at the possibility of continuation while recalling the material of the first refrain. The heterogeneous nature of the thematic materials and their constant recombination evoke manifold influences that transcend any one place, coming from nowhere, as it were.
